Why Timothy Hay?
Timothy Hay is a staple in the diet of many small pets. Its balance of stalks, leaves and seed heads makes it both nutritious and enjoyable, while the coarse texture helps keep teeth naturally worn. Compared to softer hays, Timothy Hay provides long chewing time and plenty of enrichment, making it one of the most popular choices for everyday feeding.
How should I store Timothy Hay?
Keep it in a cool, dry place with airflow. Avoid sealed plastic bags, as hay needs to breathe to stay fresh.
What is the difference between first and second cuts of Timothy hay?
This refers to the number of times a crop has been harvested, not its quality. “First cut” means the hay comes from the initial harvest of the field. After this, the crop is typically fertilised and harvested again about a month later.
The first cut tends to be coarser and longer, while the second cut is softer with shorter stems. This gives your bunny more variety, which is definitely a good thing!
How long will a box of Timothy Hay last?
A 10kg box of Timothy Hay usually lasts around 5–6 weeks for two small pets, though this can vary depending on the species, size, and how much they eat or waste. Every pet is different, so consider this a guide rather than a fixed rule.
Why choose Happy Hay for my pet’s timothy hay?
Here at Happy Hay, we pride ourselves on providing a complete service, not just a product. If for whatever reason your pet doesn’t like your order then you can get in touch and we will always do our best to replace it with hay that your pet will enjoy!
We have been making hay for over 20 years and have a plethora of equipment that allows us to make the highest quality even when the British summer isn’t giving us the weather we want! Our Hay Boxes are created and packaged at our farm in England, so each bale is quality checked to make sure you’re always getting the best.
Our small business is family-run, so everything we can do for you really means the world to us. You can rest assured that our profits are being distributed ethically and we always give back to the business – because your pet only deserves the best.
Our farm, Eurobale, is proud to hold a Royal Warrant for Her Majesty the Queen, granted in 2010 due to our supply of haylage to the Royal Stud at Sandringham, and for our ability to prove our environmental commitment.
